1988 Pontiac Firebird GTA For Sale

Here's your chance to own a nearly perfect GTA. I've owned this car for about a year and a half and have spent considerable time and money keeping it looking and running as good as possible. My only reason for offering it for sale is that I'm growing tired of spending that time and money. Frankly, it's stressful keeping any vehicle looking this good. I find myself driving my old Dodge truck simply because the hail dents, parking lot dings, and rust spots on it don't bother me one bit.

Anyway, here's the info:

I purchased this car from a dealer in New Jersey after locating it on the Internet. I flew out, picked it up, and drove it home to Kansas. Two days after I had it home I was rear-ended by a Chevy S10, which resulted in the replacement of the right rear quarter panel from directly above the tire and back. Also replaced was the bumper cover and tail light assembly. This was, in fact, a good thing. The only imperfections on the body when I bought the car were in the right rear quarter panel and now it's fixed.

The only other body work occurred about two months ago after I was caught in a hail storm. The hood and roof were fixed "conventionally", and the left front fender was replaced with an after market fender. The finish on the fender is excellent, but, to be honest, I don't like the fit. I complained to the body shop and they offered to replace it with a GM part for only the difference in the price of the parts: $175.00. If the new owner wants it replaced, they can add that to the price and I'll have it done. The hail damage also turned out to be a good thing because the left fender was starting to show some rust. So, now the car is nearly rust free.

While we're on the topic of rust: The most visible rust is under the lift-gate where the third tail light bolts on. You can see it in one of the pictures. The only other rust that I'm aware of is a tiny (less than a square inch) spot on the right fender where the paint is starting to get rough under the pin-striping.

The one great mystery of this car is the mileage. When I bought the car the odometer read 33,346 miles, but the title read 133,346. It is as if someone thought that a 14 year old car must have at least 100,000 miles on it and just added the "1" to the title. The title that came with the car (of which I still have a copy) indicated that the mileage was 107,000 when the previous owner bought it. It seems odd to me that the mileage would be on an even 1000. So, the odometer currently shows 48374 as you can see from one of the pictures. The odometer is fully capable of showing the sixth digit if there was one. When you turn the key on the dash does a self-test and the odometer shows six "eights" plus one after the decimal point. In other words, all the lights work. Another way that you can tell that the "one" isn't missing is by switching the dash to Kilometers. The number, 77851, is the proper conversion from 48374 miles. If the miles were 148374, then the kilometers would be 238784. So, what do you believe? I wish I knew! My own opinion is that the normal "wear and tear" of a vehicle with 148374 miles is usually far greater than this car shows. I am currently in the process of requesting a title history report from the state of Pennsylvania with hopes of shedding some light on this mystery.

A CarFax report for this car shows a clean title. The History section lists two reports: one on 07/19/1994 with the odometer reading blank (grrr) and one on 11/24/1998 with the odometer reading 107,000 which would be when the previous owner bought it. I did send a letter to the previous owner asking him what he knew about the car but never got a response.

I have documented this car with Pontiac Historic Services and the new owner will get that info. I have also kept all receipts for the work I've had done to it - some of which I will list below.

Some details:

Being nit-picky:

As I said above, my reason for selling this car is the stress of trying to keep it looking and running perfect. Of course, a 14 year old car isn't going to look or run perfect, so here's what I know that isn't perfect.

Some of the things I've spent money on:

Price:

Asking $10,000.00, taking offers.
